about

Zoe Sorrell, flute
Tape preparations by Nick Fagnilli
Mixed and mastered by Nick Fagnilli

Recorded May 17, 2020 in Zoe's home for her lecture-recital, "How to Give a World Premiere." For Zoe, playing with tape was an exciting venture that reminded her that technological literacy is required for so much of our lives in these times. Equitable access to the Internet is vital for the survival of all communities, let alone our new music community.

Zoe's forward-thinking interpretation of the elements of this piece stands in contrast to my thinking with regards to writing it. My goal for the electronics was to limit the techniques I had available to manipulate the synthesized sounds to an equivalent of tape machines that would have been used by Pierre Schaeffer or Luciano Berio in the mid 1950s.

Zoe also rejected the "Edenic" themes of the poem from which this piece takes its title, William Blake's Book of Thel. I agree that Blake's Innocence and Experience paradigm is not a good way to view life, and that is why I gravitated to the Cloud's attitude that when he passes, life continues. The Tender Cloud knows he is part of a larger process and is happy to have contributed to the circle of life.

As always, thank you for listening.
